چکیده

Observations suggest that g-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a relativistic fireball. We show that a large fraction, $10%, of the fireball energy is expected to be converted by photomeson production to a burst of ,1014 eV neutrinos. A km2 neutrino detector would observe at least several tens of events per year correlated with GRBs, and test for neutrino properties (e.g., flavor oscillations, for which upward moving t’s would be a unique signature, and coupling to gravity) with an accuracy many orders of magnitude better than is currently possible. High Energy Cosmic-Rays and Neutrinos from Cosmological Gamma-Ray Burst Fireballs

The recent detection of delayed, low energy emission from Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) sources confirmed the cosmological origin of the bursts and provided support for models where GRBs are produced by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of relativistic fireballs. In this review, ultrahigh-energy, > 10 eV, cosmic-ray and high energy, ∼ 10 eV, neutrino production in GRBs is discussed in the light of ...

The effect of neutrinos on the initial fireballs in gamma-ray bursts

We investigate the fate of very compact, sudden energy depositions that may lie at the origin of gamma-ray bursts. Following on from the work of Cavallo and Rees (1978), we take account of the much higher energies now believed to be involved. The main effect of this is that thermal neutrinos are present and energetically important. We show that these may provide sufficient cooling to tap most o...

Gamma - Ray Bursts , Cosmic - Rays and Neutrinos ∗

The γ-ray burst (GRB) model for production of ultra-high-energy, > 10 eV, cosmic-rays is based on the hypothesis that GRBs arise from the dissipation of the kinetic energy of relativistic fireballs at cosmological distances. Recent observations of delayed low energy emission, “afterglow,” from GRB sources strongly support the validity of this hypothesis. Observations also provide quantitative s...

Gamma-Ray Bursts: Super-Explosions in the Universe and Related High-Energy Phenomena

The recent progress in studies of gamma-ray bursts, their afterglows, and host galaxies is discussed. The emphasis is given to high-energy phenomena associated with gamma-ray burst explosions: high-energy cosmic rays, neutrinos, gravitational waves. We also show how the relativistic fireball model for GRBs can be used to constrain modern theories of large and infinite extra-dimensions. In parti...

Dirty Fireballs and Orphan Afterglows: A Tale of Two Transients

Orphan afterglows are transient events that are produced by cosmological fireballs and resemble gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows, yet are not accompanied by gamma rays. Such transients may be produced by jetlike GRBs observed off-axis, and therefore hold great promise as a test of gamma ray burst collimation. However, orphans may also be produced by “dirty fireballs,” i.e., cosmological firebal...
